Regular surface plate calibration is one of the most important ways to ensure dimensional measurement accuracy. Granite surface plates may seem no different than any other working surfaces, but they are actually a precision instrument and should be treated accordingly. To consistently achieve accurate measurements, all surface plates must maintain flatness and repeatability. Flatness denotes the difference between the lowest and highest point on the surface plate. Repeatability represents the ability to reproduce an identical measurement, within an acceptable tolerance, anywhere on the surface.
Despite granite’s toughness and durability, regular use will form wear spots over time. Since distortions form slowly, they can go largely unnoticed without the proper precautions. Although seemingly insignificant, these variations on the surface can cause measurement distortions and negatively affect a product’s final quality. For this reason, regular surface plate inspections and calibrations are essential. Our lab is equipped to help your team through ISO/IEC 17025 accredited surface plate calibration and resurfacing.
