To avoid cross-contamination, probes should be cleaned before/after storage, and between each sample. For most cases, you can simply rinse your electrodes with distilled deionized water then blot, not wipe, extra water with lint-free paper. If your probe is covered in dust, has extensive crystallization, or has dried out, you may need professional cleaning and calibration.

Unless part of your test procedure, submerge the probe only after preparing the test solution. Rapid temperature fluctuation, vibrations from stirring equipment, and other parts of the preparation process can cause unneeded damage. After taking your measurements, immediately clean your probe and either move on to the next test or put the probe into storage. If your pH meter is left out too long between test, it will become dehydrated. Never use your ph Meter’s probe as a stirring rod or for anything other than it’s intended purpose.

Never allow a probe to dry, or it will stop operating accurately. To avoid dehydration during storage, either submerge probes in the manufacture provided rubber boot or a specialized falcon tube. Do not store in deionized water. This type of storage will ruin your electrodes. Instead, store your probe in a solution such as 4M KCl, pH 4.0, or pH 7.0 buffer solutions. For the recommended solution, see the instruction manual provided with your meter.

Make sure your electrodes are filled right up to the refill hole but not passed it. To allow proper measuring, make sure the fill hole is open and uncovered.

One of the most critical parts of pH Meter care is regular calibration. Calibration corrects drift before it escapes your processes tolerance. It is important to note, even the most well-maintained pH meter will fall victim to time. As a pH meter’s probe ages, it will require more regular calibrations until it can no longer hold calibration. Delayed result returns during testing are a good indication it is time to replace a probe.
